The Rowe Family History - Section 2 - William and Laura
Introduction
My grandparents were from England. My grandfather William (Willie) Rowe was born and spent the early part of his life in the Devon area of England. He and his family specifically lived in the area around Tiverton, Devon. William moved to the Bristol area around 1900, before getting married and moving to Canada in 1907. My grandmother, Laura Wood, was born and lived in Ingrave, Essex, just outside London. She lived and worked near Bath and also lived in Bristol, after marrying William.
The Rowe family worked in the agriculture. Many of them were Ag labourers or farm labourers or dairyman. Both the females and males worked quite often as servants, especially when they were younger.
The Wood family worked in agriculture also, but being close to London, some of her family worked on the railway in London.
William Rowe
William was born April 28, 1875 in Cadeleigh, Devon. His registered name at birth was Willie. {1}
His parents James & Ann (nee Ackland) were age 31 & 33 at the time of his birth. He had a twin brother Tom, who died shortly after birth, on June 20, 1875 due to marasmus (malnutrition). {2}{3} He had an older sister Elizabeth, born April 12, 1874 {4}, she about a year old when William was born. At the time of William birth his parents were living in Welltown, Cadeleigh, Devon. His father’s occupation was Dairyman.
On June 17, 1880 William’s mother died of enteritis {5} in Cruwys Morchard, William was 5 years old. The 1881 census for Tiverton shows William, age 5 & his sister Elizabeth age 7, living with his father’s older brother, William Rowe, at Filk Knapp. {6} At the time James’ brother, William, was 50 years old, he was married and had six children of his own, ranging from age 3 to age 16. The 1881 census for Cruwys Morchard shows James living on his own in East Lane, Cruwys Morchard. James is 36 years old. {7}
Information from the 1891 census for Tiverton {8} shows William, age 15, working as a farm servant for Mr. Tucker at Thongsleigh Mill, Cruwys Morchard.
In the 1901 census, William was 25 years old and living in Bristol, England. {9}He was a boarder, living at 5 Pippen Street and working as a sawyer, an occupational name given to someone who earns a living by sawing wood.
William married Laura Wood on June 19, 1904. {10} At the time of his marriage William was living in the St. Werburgh area of Bristol and he was 29 years old. The marriage certificate shows that Laura’s father, George Wood, two sisters, Winifred and Gertrude and Laura’s brother William attended the wedding.
Less than 2 years after being married, William & Laura had their first child, Gertrude Violet, born on February 8, 1906 in Bristol. {11} At the time of her birth William was 31 and his occupation was listed as a wholesale grocer’s porter. They were living at 34 Brigstock Road, St Paul, Bristol.
In 1907 William & Laura along with their baby Gertrude emigrated to Canada. I couldn’t find any records related to their emigration, however in 1908 their second child was born in Guelph, Ontario and the 1911 Canadian census for Guelph Ontario, William and his family are listed and their emigration year is shown as 1907.
On October 2, 1908 William & Laura had their second child, William Arthur {12}. He was born in Guelph , Ontario. At the time William was 33 living at 180 Yorkshire St, Guelph. He occupation was shown as labourer.

The 1911 Canada census for Geulph shows William, Laura, Gertrude, William and Elizabeth living at 113 Dublin St Guelph and William’s occupation as labourer. {14}
On January 27, 1913 William’s daughter Elizabeth died of pneumonia, she was just over two years old. {13} At this time the family was living in Brampton, Ontario. {15}
On September 16, 1916 William completed Attestation Papers to join the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force – 242nd Battalion. He had been part of the 109th Canadian Militia Regiment as a private for 7 months prior to this enlistment. {16} He was living at 632 Bloor St, West in Toronto. His occupation was listed as street car conductor. Six weeks later, on October 30, 1916 William was discharged from the 242nd Battalion for medical reasons. {17}
On January 6, 1917 William’s fourth child, Lloyd George was born. At the time of the birth William was 42.
According to the Toronto Directory {18}, from 1919 to 1941 William lived at a several addresses in Toronto. Each listing shows William’s occupation at TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) Conductor. From this information and a picture of TTC Conductors (see below) and
information from my cousin, I know William was street car conductor for most of his career.
On July 23, 1948 William’s wife Laura died of degenerative heart disease. {19} At time they were living at 170 Melrose Street Mimico, Toronto. She was buried in the Park Lawn Cemetery in Toronto. William was 73 at the time of her death.
