The Rowe Family History - Section 5 – The Ackland Family
Introduction
This section covers the Ackland family. The Ackland family lived in the area around Tiverton, Devon, from at least the mid 1700’s. Most of the family worked in the agriculture business, either as labourers or in their early years as servants. Ann, who would marry William Rowe and was my great grandmother, she had 5 siblings. Ann and her brother and sisters would have a total of 17 children between them.
Background
Robert Ackland, Ann Ackland’s grandfather, was born on November 2, 1769 in Tiverton, Devon. {1}{2} Thomas had four brothers and two sisters. He married Elizabeth Middleton born in 1771 in Stoke Damerel, Devon. The wedding took place in Uffculme, Devon on March 19, 1800. {3}
Robert died in 1828 at the age of 59 years old. His wife Elizabeth died at age 88 in 1854.

Thomas (Ann’s father)

Thomas married Ann Tucker, born in 1813, on April 13, 1837 in Uffculme. Devon. {5}{6} At the time of their marriage, Thomas was 26 years old and Ann was 24 years old.
The 1841 census shows Thomas, age 33 and Ann, age 30 living in Kentisbeare. They have two children, John, age 3 and Thomas, age 1. Thomas listed occupation is Ag labourer. {7}
The 1851 census shows Thomas living in Wressing, Kentisbeare, Devon. Living with him are his wife, Ann age 40, his daughter Ann, age 9, daughter Mary, age 6, son William, age 4, daughter Sarah, age 1 and a visitor Sarah Ackland age 76. Thomas’ occupation is Ag labourer. {8}
The census from 1861 for Uffculme, Devon shows Thomas, age 52, and his wife Ann, age 50, living is Southhill Cottage, Kentisbeare. His occupation is Ag labourer. Living with her parents is Sarah age 11. {9}
The 1871 census for Uffculme, Devon shows Thomas, age 62 living with his wife, Ann age 60 and three of their children, Thomas, age 30, William, age 24, and daughter Sarah, age 21. Thomas’ occupation is Ag labourer. Both of his son’s occupations are listed as farm labourer. {10}
The 1881 census for Uffculme, Devon shows Ann, a widow, age 70 living in Ashill with her daughter Sarah, age 30. Ann’s occupation is listed as charwoman, apart time worker that does odd jobs, her daughter is s dressmaker. {11}
The 1891 census for Kentisbeare, Devon shows Ann, a widow, age 80 living with her daughter Sarah, age 40. {12}
Thomas died in 1872 in Uffculme, Devon, he was 65 years old and was buried on December 22, 1872. {13}
Ann died in 1900 in Uffculme, Devon at the age of 87 and was buried September 2, 1900. {14}
John
John was born in 1838 in Uffculme, Devon . He was baptised April 22, 1838 in Ashill, Uffculme, Devon {15} At the time of his birth his father, Thomas was 27 years old and his mother was 25 years old.
The 1841 census shows John, age 3, living with his parents Thomas and Ann and his younger brother Thomas age 1, in Kentisbeare. {7}
John died in 1847 at age 9
Thomas
Thomas was born in 1840, he was baptised on April 19, 1940 in Kentisbeare, Devon. {16} At the time of his birth his father, Thomas was 31 years old and his mother was 27 years old.
The 1841 census shows Thomas, age 1, living with his parents Thomas and Ann and his older brother John age 3, in Kentisbeare. {7}
The 1851 census for Honiton, Devon shows Thomas living with his uncle, John Skinner. Thomas is 11 years old, his occupation is listed as Servant Boy {17}
The 1871 census for Uffculme, Devon shows Thomas, age 30 living with his parents and his brother, William, age 24, and sister Sarah, age 21. Thomas’ occupation is farm labourer. {10}
On October 9, 1873 Thomas married Elizabeth Radford, born in Uffculme, Devon, in Uffculme, Devon. Thomas was years 33 years old and Elizabeth was 27 years old. {18}
The 1881 census for Uffcume, Devon shows Thomas, age 41, living with his wife Elizabeth, age 34 at Ashill, Uffculme. Living with them is their children, Martha, age 5, John, age 3. There is also a boarder, Edith Stubbins staying with them. Thomas occupation is listed as Ag labourer. {19}
The 1891 census for Uffculme, Devon show Thomas, age 50, and his wife Elizabeth, age 45, living at Butterleigh, Uffculme. His occupation is Agriculture labourer. {20}
Thomas died in 1895 in the Tiverton district at the age of 55.
In the 1901 census for Uffculme, Devon Elizabeth was living in Ashill, Devon as a widower. She is living with her daughter Florence Kate, age 9 years old. She is 54 years old and her occupation is shown as laundress. {38}
Elizabeth, on the 1911 census for Uffculme, Devon, was living in Ashill. She is 64 years old, a widowe and her occupation is listed as laundress. {39}
Thomas and Elizabeth would have three children together, as listed below;

Mary
Mary was born in 1844 and was baptized on December 25, 1844 in Kentisbeare {20} At the time of her birth her father, Thomas was 35 and her mother was 31 years old
The 1851 census Kentisbeare, Devon, shows Mary living at home with her parents Thomas, age 42 and her mother Ann, age 40 and her older sister , Ann, age 9 and younger brother William, age 4 and younger sister, Sarah age 6 years old. There is also a visitor, Sarah Ackland, age 75. {8}
The 1861 census for Tiverton shows Mary living at White Court and working as a servant for John Pook, who is a farmer of 30 acres. Mary is 16 years old at the time. {22}
Mary married Henry Holley in Dec 1869 in Wellington, Somerset. Henry was born in 1843 in Burlescombe, Devon {23}. At the time of their marriage, Mary 25 was and Henry was 26 years old. {24}
The 1871 census shows Mary, age 27 and her husband Henry, age 28 and their one year old son George living in Burlescombe, not to far from Tiverton, Devon. Henry’s occupation is labourer. {25}
In 1881, according to the census of Burlescombe, Mary is 36 years old and is living in Westleigh with her husband Henry, who 38 years old. They have five children ranging in age from 1 to 11 years old. They are, oldest to youngest, George, Edward, William, Sarah Ann, and Henry William. Henry occupation at the time was labourer, stone works. {26}
Mary died in October 1884 in Wellington, Devon at age 40.

The 1861 census for Tiverton shows Mary living at White Court and working as a servant for John Pook, who is a farmer of 30 acres. Mary is 16 years old at the time. {22}
Mary married Henry Holley in Dec 1869 in Wellington, Somerset. Henry was born in 1843 in Burlescombe, Devon {23}. At the time of their marriage, Mary 25 was and Henry was 26 years old. {24}

On April 4, 1875 William married Eliza (Lousia) Hooper in Kentisbeare. At the of the marriage William was 28 and Lousia was 21. {29}

The 1911 census for Kingston, Somerset shows William, age 64 and his wife, Eliza, age 57 living at Dodhill Gate. William’s occupation is shown as shepherd on farm. {33}
William died in 1931 in Taunton, Somerset at age 83

Sarah died in 1928 in the Tiverton district at age 75 year old.
Sarah’s probate was January 18, 1928.
I could not find any records that showed Sarah ever married or had any children
