Introduction
The section explores Willie’s dad, James’ family, his uncles and aunts, and cousins. Willie’s dad, James, had three older brothers; William, George, Thomas and two older sisters; Ann, Elizabeth, and one younger sister, Mary, as shown in the diagram below. The Rowe Family lived in the Tiverton area since at least the mid 1700’s.
All of James’ brothers and sisters, as well as his dad, were involved, in one way or another, in the farming business around the Tiverton, Devon area, mostly as farm labourers.
Background
George Rowe was born in 1804 in Templeton, Devon and his wife Elizabeth nee Kerslake, who was born in 1804 in Virginstow, Devon. George and Elizabeth married on April 4, 1830 Tiverton.
George & Elizabeth had seven children; William, George, Thomas, Ann, Elizabeth, James and Mary as shown in the diagram below.

Background
George Rowe was born in 1804 in Templeton, Devon and his wife Elizabeth nee Kerslake, who was born in 1804 in Virginstow, Devon. George and Elizabeth married on April 4, 1830 Tiverton.

William Rowe
George and Elizabeth’s first son, William, was born in 1831 and baptized on April 10, 1831 in Washfield, Devon. {1} At the time of his birth George was 27 years old and Elizabeth 27 was years old
The 1841 census for Washfield, Devon, shows William living at home with his parents, he is 10 years old. {2}
The 1851 census for Stoodleigh shows William, who was 20 years old, working as an Ag labourer for a Mr. George Channing. {3} Mr Channing’s farm was 94 acres and he employed three Ag labourers as well as two house servants.
William married Harriet Stoneman on Aug 21, 1853 in Washfield. {4} Harriet was born on May 12, 1833 in Cheriton, Devon. At the time of their marriage William was 22 years old and Harriet was 20 years old. William’s father George and his younger brother Thomas were present at the wedding.
The 1861 census for Stoodleigh, Devon William is living with his wife, Harriet and their children James, George, Sarah and Thomas. His occupation is listed as Ag Labourer. {5}
The 1871 census shows William and Harriet living in Chevithorne, Devon. {6} They have five children, three boys and two girls ranging in age from 1 to 11 years old. His occupation is farm labourer.
In 1881 the census shows William and his family living at Filk Knapp, Cruwys Morchard, Devon. {7} William is now 50 years old, his wife Harriet is 48 years old. They have seven children living at home, ranging in age from 3 to 16 years old. Their two oldest boys William, age 16 and Harry, age 13 are shown as working as Ag labourers. In addition, they have William’s nephew and niece, Willie and Elizabeth living with them.
The 1891 census shows William living at the Knapp Dairy House, Cruwys Morchard. {8} Only their youngest son Frank is at home, however they have two grandsons living with them as well as their daughter in law.
The 1901 census shows William & Harriet continued to live at Filk Knapp. William is now 70 and Harriet is 68. They have their granddaughter Annie living with them, she is 14 years old. William’s occupation is listed as Ag labourer {9}
In the 1911 census for Cruwys Morchard, Devon Harriet is living with her daughter Ann and her husband John Radford and their 2 year old son, William George. Harriet is 77 years old.{41}
William and Harriet would have eleven children together, listed below.

George Rowe

On April 13, 1857 George married Elizabeth Holcombe, she was born in Somerset in 1837. {12} George was 24 years old, his occupation is labourer. Elizabeth was 20 years old
In 1866 there are records of two births and two deaths at birth in 1866 for Rowe (mother’s maiden name Holcombe). The deaths coincide with Elizabeth’s death in 1866.

Elizabeth died in 1866, at age 30, I assume she died during child birth. George and Elizabeth had five children together prior to her death. At the time of her death, they ranged in age from 1 to 8 years old.
On August 30, 1866 in Bickleigh George married Maria Burston, she was born in 1846 in Crowcombe, Devon. At the time of their marriage George was 33 years old and Maria was 20 years old. {13}
In 1871, based on the Bickleigh, Devon census, George was living at Copenhagen with his wife Maria and their nine children, ranging in age from infant to 13 years old. George was 38, his wife was 25 years old. {14} Since the last census George’s first wife died and he remarried and they have had five more children. The youngest is an infant, the oldest living at home is 13. George’s occupation is shown as dairyman. {15}
In the 1881 census for Bickleigh, George and his new wife and family are still living at Copenhagen. The oldest child, Emma, is 13 years old and working as an assistant dairymaid.
George died in 1889 at age 56 in Tiverton district.
In 1891 Maria was living in Copenhagen, she is shown as a widower. She has five of her children, age 10 to 20, living with her. Maria’s occupation is listed as dairywoman and her three oldest children are listed as dairy assistants. Her granddaughter Mabel is living there also. {16} Maria is 45 years old.
Maria died in 1899 at the age of 52 in Tiverton district.
George and his first wife Elizabeth and his second Maria had fourteen children together, as listed below.

The 1901 census for Cullompton shows five of George’s children; Emma age 33, Annie age 30, Alice age 25, Frank age 24, Mark age 22 and Ernest age 20 living together in Drew's Court, High Street Higher Mill Lane, Cullompton. They are all shown as single. {17}
Thomas Rowe
Thomas was George and Elizabeth’s third child, born in 1835 in Washfield, Devon and baptized on February 18, 1835 {18} At the time of his birth both George and Elizabeth were 29 years old.
The 1841 census for Washfield, Devon, shows Thomas living at home with his parents, he is 6 years old. {2}
In 1851, based on the census for Washfield, Thomas was living at Pilemore, Washfield, Devon at the farm of Robert Carter. Mr Carter’s farm, was 165 acres and he employed 6 labourers. Thomas was 16 years old and identified as a servant. {19}
The 1861 census for Washfield shows Thomas living with his parents at East Barton with his two younger sisters, Elizabeth and Mary. His occupation is shown as Ag labourer and he is 26 years old. {34}
In January 1866 Thomas married Ellen Perry, who was born in 1840 in Honiton, Devon The marriage took place in South Molton, Devon. Their Banns of Marriage were in March 1866 in Rackenford, Devon. At the time of their marriage Thomas was 31 years old and Ellen was 26 years old. {20}
The 1871 census for Hockworthy, Devon shows Thomas living at Hole Lake, East with his wife Ellen and two children, George age 4 and Alice age 2. Thomas is 30 years old and Ellen is 26 years old. Thomas’ occupation is listed as dairyman. {21}
In the 1881 census for South Molton, Devon, Thomas and his family are living at Foredown, Witheridge. Thomas is 42 years old and his wife, Ellen is 37 years old. They have five children ranging in age from 2 years old to 12 years old. Thomas’ occupation is listed as dairyman. {22}
The 1891 census for Bamford, Devon shows Thomas and his family living at Shillingford. {23} Thomas is 54 years old and Ellen is 47 years old. Living with them are their sons George, age 26, Ernest, age 13 and daughter Florence, age 8. There is also a boarder living with them. Thomas’ occupation is listed as Ag labourer and his son George’s occupation is waggoner - someone who looks after horses.

Thomas Rowe

Thomas died in July, 1898 in Tiverton District at the age of 62.
In 1901 census for Crediton, Devon, Ellen is shown as living with her daughter Ellen Cann’s family at High Street Albert Terrace, Crediton. She is 60 years old and a widower. {24}
Ellen Rowe died at the age of 74 in Tiverton District
Ann Rowe
Ann was the fourth child born to George and Elizabeth and their first daughter, she was born 1837 and baptized on May 14, 1837 in Washfield. {29} At the time of her birth George was 31 years old and Elizabeth was 31 years old. {25}
The 1841 census for Washfield, Devon, shows Ann living at home with her parents, she is 4 years old. {2}
The 1851 census shows Ann living at home with her parents and younger siblings, Elizabeth, James and Mary at Higher House Slade, Washfield. She is 13 years old and is the oldest child at home, her three older brothers have moved out by this time.{26}
On February 14, 1857, Ann married John Brooks, who was born in the Uplowman, Devon in 1831. The wedding took place in St. Peter’s Church in Tiverton and Ann’s younger sister Elizabeth was in attendance. At the time of their marriage, Ann was 20 years old and John was 26 years old. {27}
On the 1861 census for Tiverton, Devon there is a record of John and Ann and two children, James and Elizabeth {28} living in Chevithorne. John is age 30, Ann is 23, James is 2 and Elizabeth is 1 year old. John’s occupation is shown as Ag labourer.
The 1871 census for Tiverton shows John and Ann living at Lower Yearlstone with their five children ranging in age from 5 months to 11 years old. John’s occupation is listed as Ag labourer. {29}. Living in the next residence shown on the census is her sister, Elizabeth, her husband William Hurley and their children.
In the 1881 census for Tiverton, Ann and her husband and four sons are living at Hill Cottage, Tiverton. Her children range is ages from 5 to 18 years old. He two oldest sons, John and Thomas are working as flour mill hands. Her eldest child, Bessie has left home. Her husband, John’s occupation is listed as a farm servant. John is 50 and Ann is 43 years old. They have a servant living with them. {30}
The 1891 census for Tiverton, Devon shows Ann living with her three sons, Thomas age 23 occupation general labourer, George age 20, occupation groom – stable boy and Walter age 15, occupation apprentice. Also living with her is her nephew and a boarder. Her husband John passed away in 1887 at age 53. {31}
The 1901 census for Tiverton, Devon shows Ann living 12, Fore Street Grattans Terrace, Tiverton with a boarder. She is a widow and her occupation is laundress. She is 64 years old. {32}
Ann & John would have seven children together as listed below.
In 1901 census for Crediton, Devon, Ellen is shown as living with her daughter Ellen Cann’s family at High Street Albert Terrace, Crediton. She is 60 years old and a widower. {24}
Ellen Rowe died at the age of 74 in Tiverton District
Ann Rowe

Elizabeth Rowe
Elizabeth was born 1839 in Washfield, Devon. She was the fifth child of George & Elizabeth. She was baptized on October 13, 1839 in Washfield, Devon {33} At the time of his birth both George and Elizabeth were 35 years old.
The 1841 census for Washfield, Devon, shows Elizabeth living at home with his parents, she is 1 year old.{2}
The 1851 census shows Eliazabeth living at home with her parents and older sisters Ann, and Mary and brother, James at Higher House Slade, Washfield. She is 11 years old, her three older brothers have moved out by this time {26}
The 1861 census for Washfield shows Elizabeth living with her parents at East Barton with her older brother, Thomas and younger sister Mary. She is 21 years old and no occupation is listed.{34}
Elizabeth married William Hurley, who was born in 1836 in Bradninch, Devon. They were married in 1864 in Tiverton. At the time of their marriage, Elizabeth was 25 years old and William was 28 years old. {35}
The 1871 Census for Tiverton, Devon lists William and Elizabeth living in Yearlstone with their daughter Mary, age 4 and their 7 month old son William Henry. William is 35 years old and Elizabeth is 31. William’s occupation is listed as dairyman. Elizabeth’s sister Ann and her family are living in the next residence shown on the census. {29}
William Hurley died in 1878 in Tiverton district at the age of 43.
In 1879 Elizabeth remarried. She married Samuel James, who was born in Kentisbeare, Devon {36} in 1842. The wedding takes place in Tiverton. {37}
The 1881 census for Bradninch, Devon, Elizabeth and Samuel are living in Stokes. Elizabeth’s children Mary age 14, William age 10, Elizabeth age 8, Walter age 6, George age 3 as well as a new child Ernest James 10 months old, with Samuel as the father. Elizabeth is 41 years old, Samuel is 35. Samuel is listed as a farmer with 80 acres. They have a servant. {38}
The census from 1891 shows Elizabeth and Samuel living is Cullompton, Devon with their children Annie age 14, George age 12 and Ernest age 10. Elizabeth is now 51 years old and Samuel is 46. Samuel’s occupation is cow keeper. {39}
The 1901 census for Cullompton, Devon, shows Elizabeth, age 61 living with her son Walter, age 27 and daughter Elizabeth, age 28 in Cullompton. Elizabeth occupation is dairy keeper and she is running the business. Her son and daughter are shown as workers. There are three boarders living with them.{46}
The 1901 census shows Samuel James, age 57 in an institution, the District County Lunatic Asylum in Exminster. {40}
Elizabeth died at age 63 in Tiverton district in 1902
Samuel died in 1903 at the age of 59 in St Thomas, the district of the Lunatic Asylum. {41}
Elizabeth with her first husband William had four children and with her second husband, Samuel, had one child together as listed below.
Ann died in 1906 in Tiverton at the age of 68
Elizabeth Rowe
Elizabeth was born 1839 in Washfield, Devon. She was the fifth child of George & Elizabeth. She was baptized on October 13, 1839 in Washfield, Devon {33} At the time of his birth both George and Elizabeth were 35 years old.
The 1841 census for Washfield, Devon, shows Elizabeth living at home with his parents, she is 1 year old.{2}

The 1871 Census for Tiverton, Devon lists William and Elizabeth living in Yearlstone with their daughter Mary, age 4 and their 7 month old son William Henry. William Hurley died in 1878 in Tiverton district at the age of 43.
In 1879 Elizabeth remarried. She married Samuel James, who was born in Kentisbeare, Devon {36} in 1842. The wedding takes place in Tiverton. {37}
The 1881 census for Bradninch, Devon, Elizabeth and Samuel are living in Stokes. Elizabeth’s children Mary age 14, William age 10, Elizabeth age 8, Walter age 6, George age 3 as well as a new child Ernest James 10 months old, with Samuel as the father. Elizabeth is 41 years old, Samuel is 35. Samuel is listed as a farmer with 80 acres. They have a servant. {38}
The census from 1891 shows Elizabeth and Samuel living is Cullompton, Devon with their children Annie age 14, George age 12 and Ernest age 10. Elizabeth is now 51 years old and Samuel is 46. Samuel’s occupation is cow keeper. {39}

Elizabeth died at age 63 in Tiverton district in 1902
Samuel died in 1903 at the age of 59 in St Thomas, the district of the Lunatic Asylum. {41}
Elizabeth with her first husband William had four children and with her second husband, Samuel, had one child together as listed below.

Mary Rowe
Mary was George and Elizabeth’s seventh and last child. Mary was born in 1847 and baptized on Nov 14, 1847 in Washfield, Devon {42}. At the time of her birth George was 43 years old and Elizabeth was 43 years old.

In 1874 Mary was married to Thomas Greenslade, who was born in Clayhanger, Devon in 1848 . The wedding took place on February 24, 1874 at St Peter’s Church in Tiverton. {44} At the time of their marriage Mary Jane was 27, Thomas was 26 and his occupation was carpenter.
Mary died in 1880 at the age of 33 in the Tiverton district
Thomas would remarry to Elizabeth and have additional children. He died in 1922 at age 74. {45}
