Introduction
This section covers the family history of Mary Ann Fell, Laura Wood’s mother’s family. The Fell family lived in the Ingrave area or Essex county. They worked in agriculture. Mainly as agricultural labourers. Laura’s mother Mary Ann had two older brothers John and William.
Background
Laura’s maternal grandfather was Joseph Fell who was born in 1807 in Essex, England. Her maternal grandmother was Sarah Edeck was born in 1810 in Ingrave, Essex, England.
Joseph married Sarah Edeck on September 16, 1833, in Childerditch, Essex. {2} They had three children, John born in 1835, {9} William born in 1837 {1} and Laura born in 1845. {17}

The 1851 census for Hutton, Essex shows Joseph and his family living in Hutton on the Dearsley Farm. Joseph is 41 years old and his occupation is show as Ag labourer. His two sons John, age 16 and William, age 13, are also working as Ag labourers. Mary Ann is 5 years old. Sarah is 40 years old. {4}
The 1861 census for Ingrave, Essex shows Joseph, age 52 living with his wife, Sarah, age 51 and their daughter Mary Ann, age 15. Joseph’s occupation is Ag labourer. {5}
Sarah died in 1869 at the age of 59, and was buried on March 4, 1869 at St Nicholas, Ingrave, Essex.
The 1871 census for Ingrave, Essex shows Joseph living with his son, John, age 37 and his daughter, Mary Ann, age 25 at the Thorndon Park Lodge. Joseph is an invalid. John is working as an Ag labourer and Mary Ann’s occupation is needlewoman. {6}
In 1881, the Ingrave census shows Joseph living with his daughter Mary Ann and her husband George Wood and their family. Joseph is 73 years old. {7}
Joseph died in March 1890 in Billericay, Essex, England, at the age of 83 years. {8}
John
John was born in 1834 and he was baptised on August 17, 1834 at Horndon-on-the Hill, Essex. At the time of his birth he father, Joseph was 27 and his mother Sarah was 24. {9}
The 1841 census for Buttsbury, Essex show John living at home with his parents and his younger brother William, age 4. John is 6 years old. {3}
The 1851 census for Hutton, Essex shows John living at home with his parents and younger brother William and sister Mary Ann. Both John, age 16 and William, age 13, occupation shows as Ag labourers. Mary Ann is 5 years old. {4}
The 1861 census for Childerditch, Essex shows John as boarder living with Mr. Camp on Parkway in Childerditch. John is 26 years old and his occupation is Ag labourer. {10}
The 1871 census for Ingrave, Essex shows John, age 37 and his sister, Mary Ann, age 25 living at the Thorndon Park Lodge. Also living with them is his dad Joseph who is an invalid. John is working as an Ag labourer and Mary Ann occupation is needlewoman. {6}
The 1881 census for Allwoodley, Yorkshire shows John, age 45, as boarder, living at Leeds Waterworks Project Mount Farm Cottage. His occupation is excavator. {18}
John died in 1891 at the age of 55 in London.
William
William was born in 1837 and he was baptised on May 14, 1837 at St Nicholas Ingrave, Essex. At the time of his birth his father, Joseph was 30 and his mother Sarah was 27. {11}

The 1851 census for Hutton, Essex shows William living at home with his parents and older brother John and sister Both William, age 13 and John, age 16, occupation shows as Ag labourers. Mary Ann is 5 years old. {4}
William married Isabella Pudney on January 25, 1856 in St Nicholas Church Ingrave Essex. {18} At the time of their marriage William was 19 and Isabella was 19 years old.
The 1861 census for Ingrave, Essex shows William living with his wife Isabella age 24 and their three children, Charles, age 5, William, age 3 and daughter age 6 months. William’s occupation is Ag labourer. William is 24 years old. {12}
On the 1871 census for Ingrave, Essex it shows William living at the Grange with his wife, Isabella and their seven children, Charles, William, Isabella, Mary Ann, Rachel, George and Charlotte. The children range from age 1 to 14. Also living with them is John Pudney, Isabella’s father, who is 80 years old. Both William and Isabella are 34 years old. William and his two oldest sons, Charles and William, occupation is listed a Ag labourer. {13}
The 1881 census for West Ham, Essex has William and his family in at 4 Pragle Street. West Ham. William and Isabella are 44 years old. Living with them are their seven children, William, Rachel, George, Charlotte, Emily, Jane, Sarah, and their granddaughter Ellen. Also living with them are two male boarders. William’s occupation is dock labourer. His son, William, age 22 is working as bricklayer’s labourer, his daughter Rachel, age 17, is working as an Ag labourer, his 15 year old son George is working as a plough boy, and his 13 year old daughter, Charlotte is shown as a mother’s helper. {14}
The 1891 census for East Ham shows Isabella, age 57, living with daughters Emily, age 18 and Sarah age 13 on Vicarage Lane, West Ham. Also shown on the census is a cousin Arthur Pudney. {15}
On the 1901 census for East Ham, Essex, Isabella is living as a boarder at 9 Stanford St. East Ham. She is 63 and living on parish relief. {16}
William died in December 1886 at the age of 49 and was buried at St Mary Magdalene in Essex, on December 26, 1886.
Isabella died in March 1909 in Essex county at the age of 70.
