Introduction
This section focuses on the family history of Laura Wood’s family. Laura had an older brother George, an older sister Mary Ann, a younger brother Leonard, who does at birth, two younger sisters, Winifred and Gertrude and a younger brother Arthur. They lived in the Ingrave, Essex area, close to London and worked mainly in agriculture and on the railway.

George (Laura's father)
George, Laura’s father, was born on April 11, 1841, {2} in Ingrave, Essex. He was baptized on June 13, 1841. {35} George was William and Eliza’s fourth child. At the time of his birth his father was 25 and his mother was 23. George came from a large family, he would go on to have twelve siblings, two older brothers, one older sister, four younger brothers, and five younger sisters.
William Wood, George’s dad’s occupations were in the agriculture area, he worked as a Ag labourer. His family lived in the Ingrave, Essex area for many years {3} and this was where all his children were born.
In the 1841 census for Ingrave, Essex, George was an infant, 2 months old, living with his parents, his two older brothers and his older sister in Ingrave, Essex. His dad’s occupation was listed as Ag labourer. {4}
The 1851 census for Ingrave, Essex shows George still living at home he is 9 years old. Eight of his siblings are at home, ranging in age from 6 months to 14 years old. {4}
At 20 years old, George is shown as working as an ostler (stableman) at the Bradstock residence in Loughton, Essex on the 1861 census for Loughton, Essex. {5} Loughton is about 16 miles by road to Ingrave, Essex.
The 1871 census for Ingrave, Essex shows George living back at home with his parents and with four of his siblings, Walter, Winifred and Thomas and sister-in-law. He is 29 years old and working as a thatcher, the same occupation as his dad. {6}
On January 13, 1872 George married Mary Ann Fell, who was born in May 10,1845 in Hutton, Essex and baptized on June 15, 1845. {36} The wedding took place in the Parish Church in Ingrave, Essex. {7} At the time of their marriage George was 31 and Mary Ann was 27 years old.
The 1881 census for Ingrave, Essex shows George, his wife Mary Ann and their three children; George age 8, Mary Jane age 6 and Laura age 4 living on Rectory Road, Ingrave. Essex. Also living with them is Joseph, Mary Ann’s father who is a widower. George is 39 years old and Mary Ann is 35 years old. {8} They are living next door to George’s older brother William and his family. Both George and William are hay binders / thatchers.
In 1891, according to the census for Ingrave, Essex, George and his wife Mary Ann and three children; Winifred age 9, Arthur age 6 and Gertrude age 3 and still living on Rectory Rd. in Ingrave. George is now 49, Mary Ann is 45 years old. His occupation is shown as hay binder. {9}
In 1900, George’s wife, Mary Ann died in Billericay District at the age of 54. George was 59 years old.
Base on the 1901 census for Ingrave, Essex, George is a widower and is living with his two daughters; Winifred and Gertrude in Ingrave. His occupation is shown as gardener and he is 59 years old. {10}
Mary Ann died in 1900 and was buried on March 6, 1900 in Ingrave / West Horton {26}
George died in 1906 in the Cancer Hospital in Fulham and was buried on Dec 16 ,1906 Ingrave / West Horton {27}
George Wood (Laura’s brother)
George was born in 1873 in Ingrave, Essex. George was baptized on February 16, 1873. {34} He was the first child of George and Mary Ann. His father was 32 at the time of his birth, his mother was 28 years old.
The 1881 Census for Ingrave, Essex shows George, who is 8 years old, living at home with his parents, his two younger sisters and his mother, Mary Ann, and father, George. {8}
The 1891 census for Fulham shows George living Melrose Lane In Fulham, London as a boarder. He is 18 years old and his occupation is listed as railway porter. {11}
On August 28, 1899 George married Eliza Thompson, who was born in Lea Marston, Warwickshire in 1859 The wedding took place in Sparkbrook, Warwickshire. {12} At the time of their marriage George’s occupation was railway servant. George was 28 and Eliza 40 was years old. George was living in Fulham, London.
In 1901, the census for Fulham, London, shows George living with his wife Eliza in Fulham, London. He is years 30 old and his wife Eliza was 40 years old. His occupation is listed a railway policeman. {13}
In the 1911 census for Hampstead, London shows George and Eliza living together at 65 Avenue Road, Regents Park, London N W. His occupation is shown as gate keeper for the railway. Eliza’s occupation is caretaker. George is 42 years old and Eliza is 52 years old at the time of the census. George’s sister-in-law was visiting and recorded on the census. {14}
George and Eliza had no children.
Mary Jane
Mary Jane was born in Ingrave, Essex in 1875 to George and Mary Ann. Mary was baptized on January 21, 1875. {32} Mary Jane was their second child. At the time of her birth George 35 was years old and Mary Ann was 31 years old and her brother George was 2 years old.
The 1881 Census for Ingrave, Essex shows Mary Jane, who is 6 years old, living at home with her parents, George and Mary Ann, older brother George, aged 8 and her younger sister Laura age 4. {8}
The 1891 census for St George Hanover Square, London shows Mary Jane living with her uncle William and aunt Winifred. William is a railway conductor. Mary Jane is 18 years old. Also living there is Mary Jane’s cousin Alice Brenon. {15}
The 1901 census for Chelsea, London shows Mary Jane living 103 Sloane St. working as a cook for Francis H. Villiers, a dignitary. She is 28 years old. {17}
On May 22, 1904 Mary Jane married Samuel Davie, who was born in Crediton, Devon in 1862 . The wedding took place in St Nicholas’s Church, Ingrave, Essex. {16}. At the time of the wedding Mary was year 29 old and Samuel was 42 years old. Samuel was previously married to Maria Jane Ashworth, who died in 1901 in London. They had three children together before Maria’s death. An interesting note, Samuel is from the same area in Devon as William Rowe, who would marry Mary Jane’s younger sister Laura.
The 1911 Paddington census shows Mary living at 2 Cleveland Gardens, Bayswater, London W, with her husband Samuel and their children Claude age 11, Grace age 19, Constance age 14, Gladys age 5 and Ella May age 1. Samuel’s occupation is listed as boot maker. Mary is 36 and Samuel is 48 years old. {18}

Leonard was born in 1879 in Ingrave, Essex and was George and Mary Ann’s fourth
child. He died at birth.
Winifred
Winifred was born on April 12, 1881 in in Ingrave, Essex. She was baptized on November 9, 1882. {31} She was the fifth child born to George and Mary Ann. At the time of her birth George was 40 and Mary Ann was 36 years old.
The 1891 census of Ingrave, Essex shows Winifred living at home with her parents and younger brother Arthur and younger sister Gertrude. She was 9 years old. {9}
In 1901 census for Ingrave, Essex Winifred is living with her widowed father, who was 59 and her younger sister Gertrude, who was 13. Winifred is 19 years old and she employed at the Post Office in Ingrave. {19}
On July, 8, 1906 in Ingrave, Winifred married Florance Henry Robertson who was born in 1879 in Aldershot, Hampshire. {20}
The 1911 census for West Ham show Winifred living with here husband Henry Florance at 13 Florence Rd in Plaistow, London. They have three children Olive Muriel, age 1, Violet Mary, age 3 years and Alfred George age 2 years old. Henry’s occupation is as railway porter. {21}
The 1939 census for Brentwood, Essex shows Winifred living at 20 South Drive with her husband Henry Robertson age 61, her daughters Violet, age 32, Olive, age 29. Winifred is age 58 and her occupation is listed as unpaid domestic help. Henry’s occupation is railway gateman. {22}
Henry Robertson died in Brentwood at the age of 63 in 1943.
Winifred died on March 12, 1957 in Brentwood, Essex at age 76

Arthur John
Arthur was born in 1884 in Ingrave, Essex. Arthur was baptized on April 17, 1884. {30} He was the sixth child of George, who was 44 years old when he was born and Mary Ann who was 40 years old.
The 1891 census of Ingrave, Essex shows Arthur living at home with his parents and older sister Winifred and younger sister Gertrude. He was 6 years old. {9}
The 1901 census for Hornchurch, Essex shows Arthur living at the White Hart Cottages in Hornchurch, which is about 10 miles by road from Ingrave. He is working as a railway porter, he is 17 years old. {38}
In 1905 Arthur married Eleanor Rose Drake, who was born in Navestock, Essex in 1880, and baptised on May 30, 1880. {37} . The wedding took place in Ingrave, Essex on May 7. {23} At the time of their marriage Arthur was 21 and Eleanor was 25 years old. His older sister Winifred awas at the wedding.
The 1911 census for Romford, London shows Arthur, age 27 living at 22 Milton Rd. in Romford. Living with him is his wife, Rose Eleanor, age 29 and his daughter Rose Mary age 1. Also living with them is his father-in-law George Drake. Arthur’s occupation is stableman at a brewery.{24}
Arthur and Eleanor would have one child Rose Mary (1910 - )
Gertrude
Gertrude was born on Jan 7, 1888 in Ingrave, Essex. She was baptized on September 21, 1890 (29} She was the seventh child of George and Mary Ann. At the of her birth George was 47 years old when he was born and Mary Ann was 43 years old.
The 1891 census of Ingrave, Essex shows Gertrude living at home with her parents and older sister Winifred and older brother Arthur. She was 3 years old. {9}
In 1901 census for Ingrave, Essex Gertrude is living with her widowed father, who was 59 and her older sister Winifred, who was 19. Gertrude is 13 years old. {19}
In 1908 Gertrude emigrated to Canada.
On April 6, 1910 Gertrude married James Dean Moffat, born in 1882 in Peebles, Scotal, in Guelph, Ontario Canada. Gertrude is 22 at the time, James is 28 years old and working for the Grand Truck Railway. The wedding was attended by her older sister Laura and her brother-in-law William, who were living in Guelph. {25}
On June 9, 1914 Gertrude along with her husband James and their two children, William and James arrived in Glasgow from Montreal aboard the Corsican. {26}
James died on January 27, 1945 in Peebles Scotland at the age of 63 years old.
Gertrude died on March 25,1982 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire, Scotland at age 94 years old.
