Introduction
This is section will cover William’s immediate family, his father James, his mother Ann, his sister Elizabeth and his twin brother Tom. William came from a relatively small family, only one sister and one twin brother, who died very young. His father was an agriculture labourer.
Background
William’s grandfather, George Rowe was born in 1804 in Templeton, Devon and his grandmother Elizabeth nee Kerslake, was born in 1804 in Virginstow, Devon. George and Elizabeth married on April 4, 1830 Tiverton. {2}
George & Elizabeth had seven children; William, George, Thomas, Ann, Elizabeth, James and Mary as shown in the diagram below.

Background

James Rowe
James was born in February 1844. and was Baptized on February 18, 1844 {1}. At the time James was born, his father, George, was 40 years old and his mother, Elizabeth, was also 40 years old. James had three older brothers; William, George and Thomas, two older sisters; Ann and Elizabeth and a younger sister Mary.
James’ father, worked as a farm labourer and lived in the area around Tiverton, Devon, specifically in Washfield between 1841 & 1851, {3} {4} where all of his children were born. The census information shows that he and his family had also lived in Tiverton in 1861 and Bradninch, Devon
In 1851 James was living with his parents in Washfield. Also living with him were his three sisters, Ann, age 13, Elizabeth age 11 and Mary age 3. James was 7 years old. His dad’s age was shown as 47 and his occupation was a farm labourer. His mother’s age was shown as 44.{4}
In 1861 census for Templeton, Devon has James was working as a carter (someone who drives a cart) in Stoodleigh, not far from where his Uncle William was living, he was 17 years old. The head of the farm was Mr. Blake it was 313 acres and employed 7 people. {5}
In 1871 James was a servant, he was 27 years old, living on Gingerland farm in Bradninch, Devon with his parents and his sister Mary, age 23, who was also a servant. {6}
James married Ann Ackland on March 21, 1872 in Uffculme, Devon. James was living in Bradninch, working as a husbandman (someone who works on a farm with animals) and was 28 years old. Ann was born in Kentisbeare, Devon in 1842 and was living in Uffculme, Devon when she got married, she was 30 years old. Ann’s brother William and sister Sarah were at the wedding. {8}
James and Ann had their first child, Elizabeth, in 1874. She was baptized on April 12, 1874 in Cadleigh, Devon {9}. About a year later, on April 28, 1875 in Cadeleigh, Willie and his twin brother Tom were born. {10} {11} Tom only lived about two months and died of marasmus (malnutrition). {12}
On June 17, 1880, at age 36, Ann died of enteritis at the Hill Farm in Cruwys Morchard. {13} When Ann died, Elizabeth was 6 years old, Willie was 4 years old.
The 1881 census for Cruwys Morchard show James living on his own {14} and it shows Willie, age 5 and his sister, Elizabeth, age 7 living with their brother William at Filk Knapp, Devon. {15} William at the time was married to Harriet and was working as an Ag labourer. They had 7 children of their own ranging from age 3 to age 18 years old.
James would remarry in 1885 to Mary Ann Goss. {16} She was born in 1839 in Cruwys Morchard and was unmarried and had four children of her own; Elizabeth (1869 - ), John (1871 - ), William Henry (1873 - ) and Annie (Elizabeth) (1878 - )
The 1891 Census for Cruwys Morchard show James and Mary Ann living at Westlane Cottage with his step daughter Elizabeth Goss. {17}
The 1901 and 1911 Census for Cruwys Morchard {18} {19} show James and Mary Ann living Pennymoor Farm. In 1901, two of his step-sons; John and William, as well as boarder were living with them. In 1911 just, James and Ann were living there. Both these census show James occupation as a farm labourer.
James died on Dec 1923 in Tiverton at age 79. Mary Ann died in 1922 in Tiverton at the age of 83.
Ann Ackland
Ann was born in Kentisbeare, Devon in 1842 and was baptized March 17, 1842 in Kentisbeare. {20} When is was born her father, Thomas was 33 years old, her mother, Ann was 31 years old.
The 1851 census for Kenntisbeare, Devon shows Ann living in Wressing. She is living with her parents, Thomas, age 42, her mother Ann, age 40, she is 9 years old. Also living with then is her sister Mary, age 6, brother William, age 4, sister Sarah, age 1 and a visitor Sarah Ackland age 76. Her dad’s occupation is Ag labourer. {21}
On the 1861 census for Uffculme, Devon, Ann is shown as working as a dairymaid on Mr Dobb’s 405 acre farm. The farm employed 13 people. Ann was 19 years old at the time. {22}
From the 1871 census for Kentisbeare, Devon we can see that Ann is employed by Mr Palmer working as a cook on his 200 acre farm. She was 29 years old at the time {23}
Ann married James Rowe on March 21, 1872 in Uffculme, Devon. {8}

Willie (William)

Tom
Tom was born April 28, 1875 in Cadeleigh, Devon.
His parents James & Ann (nee Ackland) were age 31 & 33 at the time of his birth. He had a twin brother Willie. Tom died shortly after birth, on June 20, 1875 due to marasmus (malnutrition). {11}{12} He had an older sister Elizabeth, see below, she about a year old when William was born. At the time of Tom’s birth his parents were living in Welltown, Cadeleigh, Devon. His father’s occupation was Dairyman.
Elizabeth
Elizabeth was born in 1874 and was baptized on April 12, 1874 in Welltown, Cadeleigh, Devon. Her mother is Ann, nee Ackland, was 32 years old at the time and her father is James Rowe, he was 30 years old. {24}
Her mother, Ann died June 17, 1880 in Cruwys Morchard, Elizabeth was 6 years old. {13}
Elizabeth and brother Willie are listed on the 1881 census living with their uncle William in Filk Knapp, Cruwys Morchard, Devonshire. She is 7 years old.{15}
The 1891 census for South Molton shows Elizabeth working as a servant in Dunridge, South Molton, Devon for the Lee family. She is age 17 years old. {25}
Elizabeth married John Vinnicombe, born in 1869 in Crediton, Devon, on December 8, 1894, in the Parish Church in Morchard Bishop. At the time of their marriage, Elizabeth was 20 years old and John was 25 years old and working as a labourer. They both lived in Morchard Bishop. Elizabeth’s uncle William was in attendance at the ceremony. {26}
Elizabeth’s husband, John, died less than a year after their marriage in 1895 in Morchard Bishop on November 7, 1895 at the age of 26 of Phthisis, which is an old name for tuberculosis. {27}
The 1901 census for Tiverton shows an Elizabeth Vinnicombe, working as a servant in the Pileywell Farm, in Chevithorne for Mr. Luxton. She is widowed. Her age is 27 years old. {28}
The 1911 census for Tiverton, Devon, shows an Elizabeth working as a domestic for Annie Pinncok at 27 Castle Street, Tiverton, Devon. She is 37 years old. {29}
The Tiverton census for 1939 shows Elizabeth living in Tiverton and she is listed as incapacitated. Her age is 65 years old. {30}
There are no records of any children being born to John & Elizabeth
Elizabeth died in 1954 at age 80 in the Tiverton district of Devon.
